Seems money isn’t anywhere as strong a motivator as you think it is.

Research has found a little bit of extra money will spur a little bit of extra effort for mundane or physical task. Once you want someone to be more creative, throwing more money at them doesn’t make them more creative. (Though it will take some of the sting out of working on a crappy account.)

Internal drive is what matters. Creative people need to become intrinsically motivated to produce better creative.

So put the checkbook down and focus on giving creatives these three key drivers.

  1. Autonomy.
  2. Mastery.
  3. Purpose.
